The challengers aren't getting any closer at the Timberlane Invitational.
The host Owls romped to the title at their own invitational yesterday with a whopping 315 points, more than double that of runner-up Winnacunnet (155). Pinkerton tied Reading for third in the 13-team field.
Seven Owls placed first and 11 others finished second through fourth as Timberlane won for the 18th straight year.
Alex Smith led the way, pinning his first three opponents and then winning by technical fall over Pinkerton's David Owens in the 130-pound finals.
He was named the tournament Outstanding Wrestler.
One of the closest wins in the finals for the Owls came at 140 where Nick Lawrence edged Lowell Holiday Tournament finalist Colin Crowell, 3-2.
Other Tmberlane champs were Zach Bridson (103), Matt Morris (119), Cam Sullivan (125), Dave Clemens (135) and Eric Petrillo (171). Bridson beat Pinkerton's Tanner Burke, 10-5 in the finals, and Morris had three pins in a tough weight class.
Finishing second for the Owls were Kevin Vadeboncoeur (112), Nate Lawrence (160) and heavyweight Mike Wright, who filled in for defending New England champ Brian Nicoll, who got the day off.
Reflecting Timberlane's depth, its "B" team finished sixth.
"It was obvously a very impressive performance," said Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian. "I was very happy with the way we wrestled."
Pinkerton had one champion, Ian Beck at 145, and Londonderry's James Chase (112) and Cody Byrd (152) both captured titles. Chase won 16-11 in the finals and Byrd dominated, improving to 24-0 on the year.

Despite forfeiting two weight classes when wrestlers didn't show up, Whittier won two of three meets in a quad, losing only to Masconomet 42-37. Shannon Constantine improved to 16-9 at 103 with three wins, including two by pin. Red-hot Jake Tannian was 3-0 with three pins at 130 for the Wildcats (11-5) while Sean McNiff (135), Steve Surrette (145) and Pat Scheidegger (215) were also unbeaten.

Methuen defeated Haverhill 44-34 and Leominster 51-9 but fell to surging St. John's Prep, which improved to 23-1 with three easy wins. C.J. Doherty was 3-0 at 125 for the Rangers with one of his wins coming over North Andover's T.J. Crabtree of St. John's. Also, Shaun McCarthy was 3-0 at 215 for the Rangers, who improved to 9-9-1. Among those who were 3-0 for St. John's were West Newbury's Joe Kelly at 135, and North Andover's Kelley Johnson at 140 and Ryan Harding at 152. Also, West Newbury's Mike Mayo won his first varsity match, at 130.

Central Catholic dropped a 45-22 decision to unbeaten Franklin, which is the top-ranked team in Massachusetts. Surging Mark Strassel (119) and Zack Lattrell (189) both had pins for the Raiders, who drop to 9-2-1. Shain Jowett lost his first match of the season, 7-0 to 171-pound Franklin star Nick Colace.

Andover cntinued to improve, sweeping Norwell, Southeastern and Plymouth North. Mike Tiwari, Reinaldo Brito and Caleb Lynch formed a strong 1-2-3 punch from 119 to 130 with three wins apiece.

Phillips Academy defeated Loomis 41-30 but fell to powerful Belmont Hill. North Andover's Ryan Gaiss continued his strong season for the Big Blue (10-3) with two wins at 135.

North Reading/Lynnfield swept Georgetown (43-21), Salem (48-28) and Malden (57-8) to improve to 12-7. Freshman Rich Falcione of North Reading filled in at 130 and went 3-0, C.J. Venuto had a big win over Georgetown's Dean Nemeroff at 140 and five other Hornets were 3-0.
