MANCHESTER — Brian Dopirak smashed his Eastern League-leading 16th home run, a two-run eighth inning blast in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' 8-2 triumph over the Erie SeaWolves last night.
Dopirak (3 for 5, 3 RBI) raised his league-leading RBI total to 52 and moved into a tie for the league lead in hits with 79.
New Hampshire (30-39) used a five-run seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and send Brandon Magee to his fourth victory. Dopirak delivered a run-scoring single off Zach Simons, scoring Brian Jeroloman (3 for 4).
Ramon Garcia entered for Erie (38-29) and served up a two-run single to Adam Calderone and a two-run double to Cody Haerther.
Magee (4-4) scattered six hits over a season-high seven innings, allowing one run and notching four strikeouts for the win.
The Fisher Cats and the SeaWolves play the finale of their three-game series today at 1:05 p.m.
Chen, Spinners win on walkoff single
LOWELL — Chia-Chu Chen delivered a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning to lead the Lowell Spinners to a 4-3 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters.
Lowell (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Yamaico Navarro and an RBI groundout by Roberto Feliz.
Vermont tied it at 3-3 in the seventh to set up Chen's heroics.
Spinners starter Jose Alvarez gave up just three hits and one run in a strong six-inning debut. He fanned seven and walked one.
Will Latimer picked up the win for the Spinners with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The win came in front of Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, who was in the house as a celebrity bartender.
Lowell continues its opening homestand this afternoon (1:30 start) for New England Patriots Day with kicker Stephen Gostkowski on hand. Gostkowski will kick autographed footballs into the stands for a third consecutive season.
