Brancato’s last-minute score gives Central thrilling win

(Continued)

But Chelmsford, which has lost three straight after a 4-0 start, wasn’t ready to give in just yet.

As time expired, QB John Campsmith dumped a pass off to Greg Johnson, who then pitched to Eric Van Gelder. The receiver advanced all the way to the Central 18-yard line before he was hauled down by a crew of Raider tacklers.

“I was expecting him to go deep,” said senior linebacker Ryan Doherty. “We had deep coverage, and they threw the short route. They got a few yards, but our defense came through at the end. I knew we would come through, and it doesn’t matter unless they get in the end zone.”

While Doherty had the utmost confidence, Leary admitted he held his breath.

“That scared the crap out of me,” Leary said with a laugh. “But we got them.”

It was a huge day overall for Brancato, who rushed for 116 yards and two scores while also making 14 tackles and adding a sack. Doherty was also a force on the edge, collecting three sacks and helping out on another.

They teach us aggression all week long,” said Doherty, who had two key sacks in last week’s win over Tewksbury. “When I see an opening, I go all out after the ball and want to end the play.”
