Scarpa, Brady rewriting record books

---- — outrageous offense

The offensive explosion in the region mirrors what we are seeing in the college and pro ranks. Welcome to the world of the spread offense.

With three games left, and as many as five for Mass. playoff team, a slew of area marks are in jeopardy.

Remarkably, Andover’s C.J. Scarpa already owns the area single-season TD pass mark with 24. With 1,739 passing yards for the season and 43 career TD passes, those area marks (2,242 yards, 51 TDs) could be his, too.

Haverhill’s Chance Brady (1.637 yards/27 TDs) and North Reading’s Carl Lipani (1,768 yards/24 TDs) could make a run at the area season marks of 2,647 yards (Greater Lawrence’s Nate Adames in 2007) and 38 TDs (Pinkerton’s Matt Jordan in 1993).

Both are on pace for 4,000 career yards, something only seven area schoolboys have ever done. Brady already is tied for 9th all-time with 51 career TDs.

Lowell chiefs

The Lowell Sun noted that Kansas City Chiefs lineman Eric Winston, who became a cause celebre when he ripped the fans for booing injured QB Matt Cassel, has Lowell ties. His wife, Jenny Scannell, is a former Lowell High athlete and his father-in-law, Dennis Scannell, was the football coach at Lowell and UMass Lowell.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to Olympic judo legend Jimmy Pedro of Methuen (turns 42 Tuesday), long-time North Andover trainer Doug Moulton (turns 64 Tuesday), BC pitcher Nick Poore of Salem (turns 20 Thursday) and Japanese League pitcher Terry Doyle of Salem (turns 27 Friday).

Vive la merf

Ex-BC and Londonderry star Stefanie Murphy is starring for Union Hainaut in France. The 6-4 center is averaging 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds (fifth in the league) in the early going.

Mysterious resignation

Legendary Winnacunnet girls basketball coach Ed Beattie, who won seven N.H. state titles and 519 games in 31 years, has stepped down and gave the Union Leader a curious explanation.

“I’m not at liberty to talk about it now. I’m going to leave it as a closed subject,” he said.

Field goal phenom

Not too many if any Mass. kickers have done what Milton Academy sophomore Justin Yoon did in a 27-21 win over Lawrence Academy. He booted four long field goals: 37, 46, 42 and 53 yards. The Nashville native’s brother, Eric, was a hockey goalie at Phillips Academy.

alma mater calls

After a brief stint at Endicott, Steve Boudreau of North Andover accepted an assistant basketball coaching position at Keene State, where he was a captain the last three seasons.

“Steve is a great student of the game and an up- and-comer in our business,” said Keene coach Rob Colbert.

Hall of Fame Family

Congrats to Lani Boardman Silversides, who was recently inducted into the York (Maine) High Hall of Fame. Silversides, who scored 1,413 points, follows her father Wayne Boardman into the Hall.

By the way, Silversides, the Phillips girls basketball coach, is on maternity leave this season. Lewis Robinson is the interim coach.
