Locals at Super 8

Central Catholic may no longer be playing in the Super 8 tournament, but the championship game tomorrow still has a distinctly local flavor.

Two-time defending champion Malden Catholic, of course, sports superstar forward Tyler Sifferlen (14 goals, 19 assists) and defenseman John McLean Jr. (2-11—13), both of North Andover.

But opponent Austin Prep is led by goalie Elijah Harris of Haverhill, who stoned St. John’s Prep in the semifinals. The Cougars’ top goal scorers, Nolan Vesey (18 goals) and Bob Carpenter (16 goals), are each from North Reading and George Sennott of North Andover has six goals.

The title game will be played at the TD Garden tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Ski star

East Hampstead native and Carrabassett Valley Academy mogul skier, Nessa Dziemian, secured her first Nor Am win on March 1 at Stratton Mountain, Vermont.

Dziemian is a two-time Junior National Champion, and is looking to earn her third title as she competes in the upcoming Junior Nationals.

Recently, Dziemian was also awarded the USSA Eastern MVP award for her performances in the 2012-2013 season.

“She’s having a great year,” said CVA head mogul coach Aaron Solomon. “Winning this Nor Am event will give her great momentum heading into Junior Nationals.”

Stilian leads bowlers to title

The best bowler in New Hampshire this winter, Pinkerton Academy’s Nick Stilian, wasn’t done when he won the individual state title a few weekends ago.

It was the first annual N.H. vs. Vermont high school bowling tournament, in which the best 10 high school seniors from each state met in a tournament in White River Junction, Vermont.

Stilian bowled the first match and won by a score of 236 to 168, then beat the No. 2 seed 239 to 200 before taking on the Vermon top seed, winning 255 to 202, to take the individual title.

The teams played a “Baker Format,” where certain bowlers are chosen for each string. The team championship was decided by the first team to win seven games and N.H. actually won the first seven games.

Foe to friend

Joe Flacco may have led the Baltimore Ravens past the Patriots in the AFC title game this winter. But that didn’t stop the Red Sox from swinging a deal for his brother.

Yesterday, the Sox acquired Mike Flacco, Joe’s younger brother, for cash from the Baltimore Orioles. But don’t get too excited. Mike hit just .218 in 103 games at single-A last season.

During Super Bowl week Mike Flacco, 26-years-old, even kicked around the idea of playing football again. The 6-5, 245 pounder sees himself as a tight end, but hasn’t playing football since high school.
