Brown bashes grand slam, Merrimack earns sweep

CALDWELL, N.J. – Merrimack first baseman Matt Brown hit his first career homer yesterday.

Not only did it come with two outs in a 1-0 game. But it also was a grand slam.

A five-run third inning – highlighted by Brown’s homer – helped the Warriors win 6-0 over Caldwell in the first game of a doubleheader.

In the second game, the Warriors scored five runs during the top of the first inning to win 12-4.

Merrimack took all three games against the Cougars this weekend to improve its record to 9-5.

“I was very impressed with our discipline and our execution this weekend,” Merrimack coach Jim Martin said. “We came down here looking for wins, and we did just that. Very solid momentum to prepare us for conference play next weekend.”

Starter Alek Morency hurled seven shutout innings in Game 1 to earn the victory. Beau Batchelor pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Starting pitcher Travis Terrill earned the win in Game 2, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks and striking out three.

Merrimack opens Northeast-10 play at Assumption on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 12 p.m.
