Merrrimack ends trip with sweep

The Merrimack softball team exploded for 19 combined runs over a two-game span, and that offensive output was enough to lead the Warriors to a doubleheader sweep against Union (10-2) and Buena Vista (9-7) yesterday afternoon at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Wrapping up their stay in Florida 5-5 while improving to 5-7 on the year, the Warriors will return back to Massachusetts and open up Northeast-10 Conference action this week, starting at home tomorrow with a doubleheader against UMass Lowell at 3 p.m.

Backed by a pair of home runs from junior Keaira Monet Perry and senior standout Kelli Jo Deardorff, Merrimack cruised to a 10-2, five-inning mercy rule victory over Union to open up their Monday slate in Florida.

Deardorff enjoyed a relatively easy outing en route to her second win of the season (2-2). The righty struck out seven and walked just three while working around four hits and two earned runs over a five-inning span.

The Warriors totaled a season-high 12 hits in the victory with eight out of the nine starters recording at least one hit.

In the second game, after falling behind early by five, the Warriors exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third, and that proved to be the difference against Buena Vista in its final game in Florida.

Despite the early deficit and three errors, the Warriors slugged out 12 hits in the late game, guided by a three-hit performance from sophomore Lindsay Gibbs while three others posted two-hit games.

Buena Vista got to senior Alie Thomas in the third. That prompted the entrance of sophomore Val Bauer of Salem, who stopped the damage before getting out of the third with the Warriors behind by five.

Whitley sets hit record

Former North Andover standout Krissy Whitley broke the all-time hits record Sunday for Southern Connecticut State’s softball team in a 4-0, 4-3 sweep of Saint Anselm. She broke the record in the first game with a double and now has 220 hits for her career. Southern Connecticut State improved to 11-6.

Rollins blanks Warriors

The Merrimack men’s tennis team was defeated on Monday afternoon by the No. 6 Rollins College Tars by the score of 9-0.

The Warriors fell behind 3-0 after the doubles matches as the duo of Vince Bellino of Amesbury and Chris Barnhart had the closest match, falling 9-8 (7-5).
