Raising the Canes

Raising the Canes

Former Central Catholic and UNH star Mike Cassano Jr. was hired as running backs coach at the University of Miami, where he was previously a graduate assistant.

Cassano will be reunited with offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. Those two helped bring UMass a national title back in 1998.

Cassano was running backs coach/recruiting coordinator at nearby Florida International from 2007-09. A terrific recruiter, he signed the top ranked 1-A player not to sign with a BCS school a few weeks back.

Betcha didn't know

Duke's Jon Scheyer once scored 21 points in 75 seconds in a high school game ... and his team lost! Or that the three top-ranked women's basketball teams in the country are from New England: UConn (Division 1), Franklin Pierce (Division 2) and Amherst (Division 3).

Disco demolition night

Souhegan junior Andrew Disco demolished the competition to win the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke at the New Hampshire Meet of Champions swim meet.

Cakes are baking

UTL happy birthday wishes go out to former Timberlane and BC distance standout Jessica Flinn. The St. Louis U. law student turns 25 Thursday.

All-North Americans

The McDonald's All-American team should be called McDonald's All-North American as Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson, two Toronto natives who attend Findlay Prep in Nevada, made the prestigious 24-man team.

A third Toronto native, Dwight Powell, is headed to Stanford and was a near-miss for the Mickey D's game.

Oprah gaffe

Mistakenly thinking it was food, Oprah Winfrey embarrassingly tried to wipe the prominent birthmark off Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees' face.

Hopefully she never interviews Mikhail Gorbachev!

The ultimate photo finish

The Mass. State Coaches Invitational track meet had three runners within 6/1000ths of a second in the 55 meters. South Boston's Alix Durand took second in 6.664, Medford's DeAundrey Williams third in 6.667 and Tewksbury's Anthony Arcari fourth in 6.670.

Making up for lost time

Reeves Nelson's father always insisted he'd never get a tattoo while living at home. Well, the UCLA freshman has been out of the house about five months and he has seven prominent tats already. He's also tattooing the competition for 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds a game.
