Farley, Lawrence punch ticket to title game

LAWRENCE — His aggressiveness and intensity were as jarring as a case of 5-hour Energy.

Pinkerton players were bouncing off Tre’Von Farley like they were bumper cars. The 6-3 senior flexed his bulging biceps and Lawrence fed off his ferocity in a 65-52 win in the semifinals of the 38th annual Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney.

Lawrence (5-0) earned a rematch against Central Catholic in the championship game tomorrow at 7:15 p.m.

“It comes from my teammates and my coaches,” said Farley, who finished with a game-high 18 points against a front line that goes 6-4, 6-5 and 6-7. “I just feel the need to perform.”

Farley, who has done modeling for Osiris Unlimited of Lawrence and Hollister at the Rockingham Mall, looks much more like a tough guy than a model. He has tattoos all over one arm and the southpaw played with his left wrist heavily taped.

“It’s a bad bruise,” he noted. “I just try to play through it. It’s kind of painful. It’s manageable.”

Farley got a late waiver from the state to play this year, his fifth year at Lawrence, so he wants to enjoy it.

That included hammering home a dunk early in the fourth quarter.

“I was thinking two hands or one hand? And that Coach (Raymond Nunez) was going to scream at me (if I missed),” he recalled.

One hand is a bit safer and he threw it down with authority to make it 54-42.

Lawrence got off to a fine start as junior Kevin Fabian (16 points) drained three 3-pointers in the first quarter. Pinkerton tied it at 18-18 early in the second quarter as Scott Bradley (team-high 15 points) banked in a short jumper and hit two free throws.

A Bradley offensive rebound bucket cut the margin to 29-28 in the first minute of the third period.

Lawrence took control soon after on threes by Julius Martinez and Fabian then back to back hoops by Fabian and Esmelin Romero off Astro turnovers. The lead was never less than seven after that.
