Karalis off to quick start at WPI

Perfect 10

Andover native Chris Bartley has guided his WPI men’s basketball team to a 10-0 start. Freshman Zach Karalis of North Andover, last year’s Eagle-Tribune MVP, has been a major addition. He’s averaging 10.1 points while his former high school teammate, Mike Moroney, has appeared in four games.

King and his court

Redshirt freshman Scott King, a 6-8 freshman forward from Derry, is averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds for Division 1 Stony Brook.

Ultimate sports family

Not to be a suck-up to the boss, but Bill Burt has to be on cloud 9.

The Eagle-Tribune sports editor’s son Max is a fine golf (helped Eagles to D1 States), basketball (almost 11 points a game), baseball player as a junior at St. John’s Prep, his brother Keith Burt is golf pro in Florida, and his niece, Katie Burt of Lynn, just signed a hockey scholarship to BC.

Also, his nephews, Evan Bunker (second-team All-East running back for Trinity) and Craig Bunker (Boston Cannons of MLL), are football and lax stars.

Date with a legend

Earlier in the week, the Eagle-Tribune met up with legendary St. Anthony of Jersey City basketball coach Bob Hurley Sr. See what he had to say on a host of issues. Story on page 11.

3-point correction

Andover statistician Bob Hughes has given us every stat known to man and I still mess it up. Mea culpa.

We had in our winter preview pull-out section a list of the all-time area girls 3-point leaders and I somehow forgot Andover’s Nicole Boudreau, who had 359. No. 2 in a 5-year career at Haverhill and Brooks is Mary Hart with 288 and the previous four-year leader was Andover’s Meghan Thomann with 231. The boys’ mark is Andover’s Chris Vetrano with 337.

head coach at 19

Tiny Easton High of Maine (49 boys and girls in grades 9-12) opened some eyes in July 2011 when it hired then 19-year-old Dillon Kingsbury as its boys varsity basketball coach. The move turned out to be a wise one. At last look, he had a 17-5 record in the one-plus seasons.

Wishful Thinking

I really have a hard time with baseball writers using the phrase “post-steroid era.” Methinks plenty of players are still taking steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

Maine hazing

Twelve players from the Dexter (Maine) High football team were suspended from school and are facing criminal charges for an alleged hazing incident during a November sleepover at the school. According to the Bangor Daily News, one mother said, “(My) son had his pants pulled down while three players took turns hitting his backside with a polycarbonate bat.”

Yet schools continue to send athletes away to summer camps. That just tells me the coach, AD, principal, superintendent and school committee are hopelessly naive or hopelessly incompetent.

The next crosby

Connor McDavid, a 15-year-old phenom with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, is frequently called the next Sidney Crosby including by Crosby himself. He signed a contract with Reebok, which could be worth a couple million dollars.
