Hunt transfer a big blow to Andover softball

Andover’s loss, brooks’ gain

Andover softball took a big hit when Cassandra Hunt, who was the Golden Warriors’ ace as a sophomore last spring, transferred to Brooks. Her brother, Dustin Hunt, transferred from Andover the year before and is now starring at St. John’s Prep.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to minor league catcher David Wendt of Methuen (turns 26 Wednesday) and Merrimack basketball player Melissa Miller of North Andover (turns 20 Saturday).

Tweet, tweet

Avery Johnson Jr. tweeted this after his father was fired by the Brooklyn Nets. “I’m sorry are best players couldn’t make open shots. Yeah that’s my dads fault totally.”

That’s my boy

Sanborn’s 6-3 center Logan Kalinowski, a freshman who splits time between the JV and varsity, comes from good stock. His father, 6-4, 215-pound “Big Ben” Kalinowski (NA ‘89), is a member of the North Andover Hall of Fame for his basketball and track (discus) prowess.

Shock the world

Local fans weren’t very confident in Central Catholic, which nearly shocked the basketball world by throwing a major scare into defending MaxPreps national champion St. Anthony’s of Jersey City before falling 54-40.

One blogger named MVCfan wrote, “This will be a 30+ point difference and only that little because St. A’s will use the bench in the 2nd half. Could be 50 or 60 if they want it to be.”

Another know-it-all had the line at 39.5 and said he’d still take St. Anthony.

The next crosby

Connor McDavid, a 15-year-old phenom with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, is frequently called the next Sidney Crosby including by Crosby himself. McDavid signed a contract with Reebok, which could be worth a couple million dollars.

good sports, poor sports

There are some morons in high school sports like Larry Winters, who encouraged his Bloomington (Ind.) South High’s girls basketball team to continue shooting in a 107-2 win. There are some are pure class, though.

In an Arizona High school girls soccer tourney, Mountain View coach Brian Ronan refused to run up the score against a decidedly inferior opponent. His team had to win 16-0 to advance, and probably could have, but he refused and settled for a 6-0 win.

Wishful Thinking

I really have a hard time with baseball writers using the phrase “post-steroid era.” Methinks there are still plenty of performance-enhancing drugs in the game.

Likely story

Maryland recently added football recruit Will Likely. Don’t tell Central Catholic track coach and proud Maryland alum Katie Andrade, but based on the program’s history the past few years, the headline soon may be: Will Likely transfer.
