Soaring sanford

Zach Sanford, who was the 2012 Eagle-Tribune MVP as a junior at Pinkerton, is ranked the 83rd North American skater by NHL Central Scouting for the NHL Draft in June. A forward for the Islanders Hockey Club (EJHL), Sanford is being heavily recruited by Merrimack, UNH and ULowell, reports the Eagle-Tribune’s Mike McMahon.

Powerful Pinkerton

Speaking of Pinkerton, the Astros have produced three Division 1 players in recent years. Paul Thompson was an All-American at UNH, Sanford is D1-bound and J.D Dudek has committed to BC.

Unfortunately for coach Casey Kesselring, Sanford is playing Juniors and Dudek transferred to Kimball Union. Both starred for last year’s Division 1 championship team.

Seymour’s son

DeVondre Seymour, a 6-6. 320-pound junior at Gwinnett (Ga.) High, is racking up the big-time football scholarship offers. He is the nephew of ex-Patriots star Richard Seymour, who has adopted him.

Niang buzzer-beater

Iowa State freshman Georges Niang of Methuen scored with two seconds left Wednesday to beat West Virginia 69-67. It already has been quite a year for Niang. Last week he was Big 12 Rookie of the Week when he averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two games.

Wrong sport

It’s safe to say one Georgia Tech star football lineman’s parents were basketball fans. His name? Shaquille Olajuwon Mason.

Big shoes to fill

Whoever replaces Alabama’s D.J. Fluker will have big shoes to fill, in every sense of the expression. The 6-6, 335-pound All-American wears a size 22 shoe.

Two-sport coach

Andover football coach E.J. Perry has been named the Golden Warriors’ new boys volleyball coach, replacing Dave Kuykendall, who went 30-35 in three years. Perry built a dynasty at Salem (112-0, 6 state titles) and went 45-42 in four years at Methuen.

Football Follies

There is a certain science to picking all-star teams. In football, often the best players play the same position so you balance the team out listing the players at another position.

For example, a star running back often is a star linebacker or defensive back, too. But the player at least has to be pretty good at the other position. A buddy of mine from the Southern part of the state said his town’s local star, who made the 26-player Mass. Football Coaches Association All-State team as a defensive back, couldn’t have played more than a handful of plays on defense the entire season.
