15 years ago last week: Upon further review, Owls wrestling streak ends
It was a debate 15 years ago that took a national magazine and cross-country phone calls to settle.
After winning 90 straight dual meets, Timberlane fell 45-28 to Marshwood, Maine, in a weekend tournament. Neither of the Owls’ co-coaches, Don Woodworth and Barry Chooljian, felt that the loss counted as it was suffered in a tourney, not a regular dual meet. But Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine said that the loss does indeed end the streak, and subsequent calls to prestigious college programs cemented the decision.
“I called Penn State and then Iowa to see how they count national (tourney) duals in college,” said Chooljian. “They both counted them on their record. I guess that’s the way you have to.”
Woodworth concurred, saying, “We accept that. When a publication like (Wrestling U.S.A.) says it’s over, it’s over. We’re not going to contest it. We’ll just move on.”
In fact, Timberlane’s streak could have been longer than 90 wins since it didn’t count its victories in dual meet tournaments in that number, but Chooljian wouldn’t go back and revisit those meets and add to its total.
The Owls wasted little time starting another streak, clobbering Haverhill, 57-7 in their first meet after the setback.
