Merrimack women lose to persistent Pace

Kelly Schatzlein netted 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals, but Merrimack women’s basketball lost 71-61 to Pace.

Merrimack (11-7, 7-7 NE-10) play their next conference game Saturday at Assumption at 1:30 p.m.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort in the first half,” coach Monique LeBlanc said. “But in the second half we did not bring that same level to the defensive end. That, coupled with so many turnovers, really sealed our fate.”

Schatzlein’s double-double was her eighth this season.

Ashley Weissmann finished with 12 points and three rebounds in 32 minutes. Jaclyn Lyons scored 11 points and had a team-high five assists. Melissa Miller of North Andover came off the bench to score six points in only 7 minutes.

The turning point came in the second half when the Setters outscored the Warriors 20-6 from the 16:45 mark until the 8:02 mark after Merrimack was ahead by eight points.

After shooting 66.7 percent in the first half, a season-high, the Warriors closed the game shooting 47.9 percent. The Warriors committed 21 turnovers which led to 21 points for the Setters.
