Medal mania

ANA Synchro hit the pool last weekend for the first the official meet of the season, and the hardware haul was amazing. The synchronized swim team from the Andover/North Andover YMCA picked up 14 gold, 11 silver and 6 bronze medals. Looks like the team is on its way to another huge year.

Today’s Central Catholic at Methuen girls basketball game will benefit the Relay for Life Coaches vs. Cancer campaign. Players will be wearing pink warm-up shirts and shoelaces to raise awareness for cancer research. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Donations can be sent to: MHS Girls Basketball, 1 Ranger Road, Methuen MA 01844.

Pro Boxing back in Lowell

Chicago Fight Clubs Promotion will bring pro boxing back to the city of Lowell on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Saturday night, March 16 at Tsongas Arena.

CFC Fight Night will showcase Lowell fan favorites “Irish” Joe McCreedy and Sean Klund.

McCreedy (13-6-2, 6 KOs) will be fighting for the vacant United States Boxing Organization (”USBO”) light heavyweight title against an opponent to be determined in the 10-round main event. Eklund (11-4, 2 KOs) will be fighting in the eight-round -co-feature.

Three other Lowell boxers -- light heavyweight Ricky Sylvester, junior welterweight Noun Soriya and bantamweight Mike Martin - will all be making their pro debuts.

“We packed the house on a Wednesday night (May 9, 2012 in first pro card held there in seven years) with Joey and Sean (CFC promotes both fighters) on top of that card,” Chicago Fight Clubs Promotion president Cynthia Tolaymat explained. “That was an incredible turnout, especially for a weekday, and a tribute to the passionate boxing fans in Lowell and surrounding towns. We’re really excited about going back to Lowell.”

Also schedule to fight on the undercard is exciting Lawrence junior middleweight Eddie “Thunder” Caminero.

Tickets (all reserved) go on sale today.
