GET WARM QUICK

Winter’s latest blast got you down?

Remember that the spring season is just around the corner.

Friday, yes as in five days from now, senior co-captain Katie Bettencourt of Salem and the UMass Minutemen open their 2013 softball season at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton against Long Island University-Brooklyn.

SPEAKING OF SPRING

Another guy thinking spring is Pentucket Regional baseball coach Tom L’Italien.

He will host the 10th annual Pre-Season Sachem Baseball School at Pentucket during the week of March 11-15. There will be one session, which runs 4-6 p.m. all week for players in grades 1-9. The week long clinic will emphasize the proper skill development in pitching, catching form throwing and hitting. The Pre Season Sachem Baseball School also features 3 indoor mounds and one indoor batting cage. For more information or for a brochure please call L’Italien at (978) 265-6128 or e-mail at TLCAMPS@ME.com.

SHOT IN THE DARK

Former Lowell Spinner Bryce Brentz, an outfield prospect looking to make the Boston Red Sox this spring, shot himself in the leg last month.

Now, there are a ton of cheap shots here, about this franchise and putting it out of its misery after an embarrassing last two years, but let’s avoid pummeling the Olde Town Team here.

Brentz was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2010. He hit a combined .290 with 17 home runs and 76 RBIs last season in Double-A and Triple-A.

And weeks before spring training is to begin, he shoots himself in the leg?

Word is he’ll be OK. Good for him. As for the Sox, they had better not figure this as an omen for the upcoming campaign, to which pitchers and catchers report this week.
