Monarchs lose in shootout to Providence

The Manchester Monarchs scored three goals in the third period but lost in a shootout 5-4 against the Providence Bruins last night.

Manchester (21-22-2-3) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins (27-17-0-3) are in second.

“We got a lot out of our guys in the third period,” Monarch head coach Mark Morris said. “The second period put us in a hole. We spent a lot of energy in that period. I credit our guys for hanging in there and battling back. We did all we could until the shootout. We just needed a save.”

Goalie Martin Jones (7-16-3) took his third shootout loss of the season. He stopped 22 of 26 shots in regulation and overtime, then stopped just three of eight shootout attempts.

Providence goalie Niklas Svedberg (22-6-2) made 27 saves on 31 shots in regulation and overtime, then stopped four of eight shootout attempts.

The Monarchs tied it 4-4 at 16:46 of the third period with a goal by Tanner Pearson.

Monarchs left winger Colton Yellow Horn scored his first career AHL goal and Manchester defenseman Andrew Campbell scored his first goal since Nov. 19, 2011.

Manchester went 1 for 8 on the power play. Providence was 2 for 5 with the man advantage.

The Monarchs, which are on a six-game winless streak (0-5-0-1), host the St. John’s IceCaps at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday.
