Merrimack men trip UMass Lowell; Lady Warriors fall

---- — NORTH ANDOVER — Merrimack College trailed by seven with 12:57 to play, but went on a 10-0 run and held on to beat Division 1-bound UMass Lowell 83-80.

Freshman J.T. Strickland’s jumper with 41 seconds to play gave Merrimack a 79-77 lead it would not relinquish.

Senior Mike Clifford tied a career high with 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Strickland had 16 points and Troy Hammel added a career-high 15.

“We competed today,” said Merrimack head coach Bert Hammel. “They left it all on the floor. It was a great win.”

Akeem Williams exploded for 33 points for UMass Lowell (14-9, 10-9 NE-10). Romeo Diaz of Methuen added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Merrimack, which improved to 10-14 and 7-12 NE-10, is at St. Michael’s Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The women’s game is at 5:30 p.m.

NORTH ANDOVER — Kelly Schatzlein recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds but it was not enough as UMass Lowell dropped Merrimack 91-72.

Chloe Rothman scored 15 points off the bench and Jaclyn Lyons added 10 points.

The visitors were a red-hot 14 of 25 on 3-pointers including 5 for 5 from Erika Sjoberg (17 points) off the bench. Bianca Simmons scored 26 points with seven rebounds, six assists and six steals.

Merrimack, which has lost seven of its last eight games, dropped to 12-11, 8-11 NE-10. The River Hawks are now 16-6, 13-5 NE-10.
