WALSH COMMITS TO STONEHILL
Central Catholic senior guard Courtney Walsh has committed to play basketball at Stonehill College.
She received offers from Stonehill, Assumption and Bentley.
She will join former teammate Casey McLaughlin who is an incoming freshman for the Stonehill basketball squad.
Walsh averaged 9.8 points per game last season for the Division 1 state champs. The Eagle-Tribune All-Star scored 19 points, including two huge free throws with 7.8 seconds left, in the state semifinal win over Braintree at TD Garden.
Walsh was an Eagle-Tribune Super Teamer in 2012 when she averaged 12.0 points and shot 73 percent from the foul line. That year, she averaged 16.0 points per game in February after averaging 9.0 points a game early in the season. In the playoffs that year, she poured in 16 points in win over Billerica and 19 points in a win over Westford.
She has won a state title in soccer her freshman year.
My Sunday baseball Q&A this week will be with Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey who is sporting a 3.23 ERA in his 19 starts this year. Fans didn’t like him too much when he wasn’t pitching well his first two years in Boston but he has become more likable as he has pitched better this year following Tommy John surgery after the 2011 season.
It’s a good opportunity to get to know more about Lackey on and off the field. Don’t miss it.
OWENS’ DOUBLE-A DEBUT
Red Sox pitching prospect Henry Owens will make his Double-A debut with the Portland Sea Dogs tomorrow in Bowie.
Owens, 21, was 8-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 20 starts with the Single-A Salem Red Sox this season.
He has posted a Carolina League and Red Sox minor league organization-leading 123 strikeouts in 104.2 innings pitched. He also pitched 19.1 straight hitless innings during July.
