North Andover names Pinksten varsity coach

When Megan Pinksten joined then-head coach Sue Breen’s basketball staff at North Andover two years ago, she began to think that she’d be interested in applying for the head job whenever Breen decided to retire.

The position officially became hers yesterday.

The former Andover High star who played her college basketball at Assumption, said about being a varsity high school coach, “This is always something I’ve known and wanted.”

Pinksten served as the junior varsity head coach and a varsity assistant under Breen.

“It’s a fun team,” she said about the group of players she is inheriting. “We have a lot of athletes and we’re going to play a run-and-gun game. Sue stressed teaching defense and that won’t go away.”

Pinksten has been a guidance counselor at North Andover High since 2007. She accepted that position soon after earning her graduate degree from Boston University.

While at BU, she was an intern in the North Andover High guidance department.

She also is the North Andover JV volleyball coach.

Before she began coaching at North Andover she was the Andover freshmen coach and a varsity assistant four years under Jim Tildsley.

North Andover athletic director Jon Longley said in a press release, “Megan is a person who is passionate about her role as an educator/coach and is a leader within the athletic department as well as the school community at large. We are looking forward to a very bright future in Girls Basketball at North Andover High.”

This past winter, the North Andover girls team advanced to the Division 2 North finals for the first time since 1992.
