Methuen's Pare nearly perfect for UMass Lowell

Brilliant student

UMass Lowell’s @text5:Ben Pare@text5: of Methuen made the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team. He must have been an easy choice with his 3.941 GPA as a biology major. He also placed 26th at the NCAA Division 2 East Regionals.

from band to basketball

Still hard to believe that just three years ago @text5:Andrew Del Piero@text5: was a 7-foot-3 tuba player in the LSU band. The Texan decided to give basketball a try (he hadn’t played since freshman year in high school) and now is a senior starter averaging 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds.

eighth all-time

Virginia freshman swimmer @text5:Rachel Moore@text5: of Andover placed 10th in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.92 at the ACC Championships. She now ranks eighth on UVA’s all-time list. ... Add to the All-Name Team UMass Lowell trackster @text5:Shaniece Cola@text5:.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to former Central Catholic goalie @text5:Kyle Williams@text5: (turns 19 today), @text5:Steve Holman@text5: of Lawrence, the ironman of NBA announcers (turns 59 tomorrow), and Baseball Hall of Famer @text5:Jim Rice @text5:of Andover (turns 60 Friday).

Duke over UNC

Duke beats North Carolina again. Duke senior @text5:Seth Curry @text5:and his older brother, current Golden State Warrior @text5:Stephen Curry@text5: from Davidson are now the NCAA’s leading brother scoring combo. They surpassed UNC’s @text5:Tyler Hansbrough@text5: and Notre Dame’s @text5:Ben Hansbrough@text5:.

Sign of the apocalypse

Ex-Celtic @text5:Antoine Walker@text5:, who blew over $120 million dollars, was playing in a celebrity bourre tourney during NBA All-Star weekend. For one of the few times Walker, who reportedly lost millions gambling over the years, actually won.

Penn State family

Boston College recently offered Bergen Catholic junior defensive end @text5:Kurt Holuba@text5:. The Eagles, however, will probably be out of luck if Penn State offers. The Penn State 118,000-square foot indoor practice facility, Holuba Hall, was donated by his family.

Managing just fine

Former Andover High All-Scholastic volleyball player @text5:Joseph Kuykendall@text5: is a manager for the James Madison basketball team. He said proudly it was a position his parents, @text5:David @text5:and @text5:Laura@text5:, both held at JMU.

Role model?

Hard to believe @text5:John Daly@text5: is homeschooling his son, fourth-grader @text5:John Daly Jr.@text5: The oft-troubled golfer, a reality show in waiting, doesn’t strike me as the scholarly type.

New mexico shootout

Bryce Alford @text5:of La Cueva High in New Mexico outscored @text5:Cullen Neal@text5: of Eldorado 52-39 but Neal’s club won 89-79. Their fathers, ex-Indiana great @text5:Steve Alford @text5:and former Georgia Tech star @text5:Craig Neal@text5:, coach together at the University of New Mexico. Alford will play for the Lobos and Neal is headed to St. Mary’s.
