Salem girls hoops bows out

NASHUA, N.H. — Salem girls basketball could not have drawn up a better start to yesterday’s tourney matchup with Bishop Guertin.

“We came out and caught them off guard a little,” said Blue Devils coach Annie Alosa. “Our defense came out strong and I’m not sure they were quite ready.”

No. 8 Salem opened hot against the No. 1-seeded Cardinals, grabbing a 16-13 lead after one quarter.

But thing turned quickly, and Bishop Guertin returned to form for an 86-39 victory in the Division 1 New Hampshire quarterfinals last night.

Defending state champion BG moves on to face Londonderry in the Division 1 semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University.

“It was a great start,” said Alosa. “But we struggled a little after that and we just didn’t really have enough offense.”

Leading Salem was junior guard Amanda Bickford, who scored a team-high 16 points just days after she posted 20 points in Salem’s tourney-opening win over Merrimack.

Also standing out for the Devils was Brenna Blakslee (10 points), while Lizzy Twomey set the tone with aggressive defense.

“Bickford had another terrific game,” said Alosa. “She has had a great year. And Twomey was amazing on defense. She had a few defensive highlights.

“It’s been a great year, and I am so proud of the girls.”
