Hillies' Mayhew breaks own record, places third at New Englands

BOSTON — Haverhill senior Alex Mayhew had two reasons to be beaming with pride.

Mayhew broke his own school record and he finished third yesterday at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track.

It’s been quite an 8-day stretch for Mayhew. Last weekend he tied Rusty White’s 23-year-old 55-meter record with a 6.58 and smashed it with a 6.50 in the finals. Yesterday he ran a 6.54 in the prelims and 6.47 in the finals.

Harold Cooper Jr. of Hillhouse High in Connecticut won in 6.42 followed by Taj Amir-Torres of Amherst-Pelham in 6.45.

It was a quiet day for the locals as Methuen’s All-State mile champion Mike O’Donnell sitting it out and New Hampshire coming off a month layoff.

Other local individual competitors were: Pelham’s Sutton Bradbury-Koster (14th, 55 hurdles, 8.23), Timberlane’s Danielle Gajewski (24th, 55 meters, 7.70), Pinkerton’s Morgan Sansing (22nd, 2-mile, 11:57.03), Timberlane’s Hannah Kimball (20th, mile, 5:33.18), Londonderry’s Kristen Bourque (14th, 300 meters, 41.45), Londonderry’s Amanda Szymanski (11th, 600 meters, 1:37.68), Windham’s Kristen Tilley (17th, 600 meters, 1:41.13), Pinkerton’s Connor Kwiecien (15th, 600, 1:25.16), Londonderry’s Morgan McGrath (19th, 1,000 meters, 3:11.18), Salem’s Olivia Burke (16th, high jump, 5-1) and Andover’s Cassie Kobelski (9th, shot put, 35-8.75).
