Skywalking Reyes opening eyes

---- — Jam session

Rick Gorman of the Donovan’s Fall Ball League compared a resounding slam dunk by Whittier’s Justin Reyes on a Medford player to some of the jams by ex-St. John’s Prep leaper Pat Connaughton, who now starts for Notre Dame.

same old laSpada

Billerica’s Nick LaSpada, who is arguably the greatest QB in MVC history, played wide receiver as a postgrad this fall at Taft. He caught the winning TD pass in a 41-36 win over Kent then sealed the win with a late interception. He hopes to attend Yale.

Radio option

Sick of the windbag “Big O” and overexposed contrarian Michael Felger on afternoon radio? The Lowell Spinners PR whiz Jon Goode and GM Tim Bowman are off to a fast start on their Monday 4-6 p.m. show on WGAM 1250/900. Last week, they had on a surprisingly candid Dan Duquette.

Watered down

Grade inflation at Ivy League schools has been well-documented. It also applies to athletics. A press release touted “Harvard places 19 on all-Ivy football team.”

Move your feet

West Virginia’s Kevin Noreen somehow managed to foul out in eight minutes vs. Gonzaga.

speedy recruit

BC basketball stars Katie Zenevitch of Methuen and Nicole Boudreau of Andover better have their track shoes ready for next season. BC point guard recruit Kami Mickens of Texas, the daughter of former NFL defensive back Ray Mickens, is a track star with bests of 12.24 in the 100 meters and 56.12 in the 400.

Shameless records

I yawn when somebody puts up historic stats. It’s generally 1. against teams which are truly dreadful. And 2. due to a classless coach desperately seeking his 15 minutes of fame so he rubs the other team’s nose in it.

That was the case Tuesday when Divison 3 Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor scored 138 points (52-of-108 shooting, 27-71 on 3’s) in a 179-104 win over predictably winless and hapless Faith Baptist Bible. Those shooting numbers are mediocre.

Some classless high school outbursts included Cheryl Miller scoring 105 points in a 179-15 massacre, Lisa Leslie (101 points in a half, the opponent didn’t return for the second half) and Dajuan Wagner (100 points).

Recruiting night

The annual free Eastern Mass./Southern New Hampshire college football recruiting night is always a good take for high school players. It will be on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Tewksbury Country Club, 1880 Main St. in Tewksbury.

Several colleges will be in attendance. For more information, call Brian Hickey at 978-640-7834.

No nepotism

It’s amusing what isn’t included in college biogs. For Bryant hoopster Joe O’Shea, it mentions his father was the longtime St. Michael’s coach Tom O’Shea. It neglects to point out his uncle is Bryant coach Tim O’Shea!
