Governor’s Academy senior Kayla O’Connor of Merrimac never seems to slow down. In the fall she made the honor roll again, starred on the soccer team and signed her lacrosse scholarship to Boston College.

West Virginia’s Kevin Noreen somehow managed to foul out in eight minutes vs. Gonzaga.
Record not race
Regrettably, football coach Jon Embree inserted race into the debate after he was fired after just two years at Colorado.
“We don’t get second chances,” he said of black coaches.
Generally, two years isn’t enough time but the former Colorado tight end did such a horrific job (1-11 this year, 4-21 in two years) that he had to go. His sad record, not his race, will prevent him from getting another head job.
londonderry and the red sox
New Red Sox third base coach Brian Butterfield is the brother of Londonderry’s Val Reilly and the uncle of former Lancer and St. Anselm athletes Jack and Rachel Reilly.
Jumping to conclusions
Skywalking Arizona State hoop star Jahili Carson claims to have dunked as a 5-3, 13-year-old. Methinks there is a bit of exaggeration there.
Grand Canyon
College of Charleston’s 6-6 freshman guard Canyon Barry, who is redshirting this year, is the fifth son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry to play Division 1 college basketball. Canyon shoots free throws underhanded like his old man.

One St. John’s-Andover football preview said Andover coach E.J. Perry’s father “Christopher” is a 1962 Prep grad and is in the school’s Hall of Fame. Wrong name (Ernie), wrong year (1954), wrong Hall of Fame. He’s in the Mass. Track Coaches Hall but not the St. John’s Hall.
No Mercy
UMass Lowell women’s basketball got off to quite a start by pounding Mercy, 134-65, in its season opener. The River Hawks should emphasize offense as their coach, Sarah Behn, was an unstoppable force at Foxboro High (2,562 points) and Boston College (2,523).
Then again, she should know defense, too. She set the national high school soccer shutout record at Foxboro.
Unsung hero
Our final “Unsung Hero” of the fall is a good one. Senior Ryan Lanctot was the manager, statistician and motivational speaker for the Timberlane boys soccer team.
Coach Mitch Mencis called him “invaluable to the team and program as a whole.”
Lanctot made an emotional speech at the team banquet about what the team meant to him and presented the coaches with a handmade owl, the school mascot.
Union shenanigans
A sweetheart teachers’ union deal cost Schenck High of Maine its championship boys basketball coach. Steve LeVasseur, who had won five state titles and over 300 games in 22 seasons at Schenck, his alma mater, recently stepped down.
According to the Bangor Daily News, his beef was his pay was being cut from $5,019 to $3,150. That was due to a new policy that teachers in the system would get a higher stipend than those from outside the system.
