Streaky Merrimack hopes to start new streak tonight

The streaky Merrimack College hockey team, which has gone without a win in its last four games after getting seven points in the previous four games, plays a weekend doubleheader with Hockey East foe Providence College.

Merrimack, fifth in the Hockey East standings at 3-3-1 hosts the fourth place Friars, at 4-3, tonight at Lawler Arena at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Warriors travel to Providence for a 7 p.m. game.

Here are some facts and numbers to chew on.

Lifetime vs. Providence: Merrimack is 29-77-8 lifetime but is 4-1-3 in its last eight against the Friars at Lawler. Last year, they went 1-1 at home, losing to PC 6-1 as the #1 team in the nation.

Last season Providence won the season series 2-1 over the Merrimack.

Here is a quick wrapup of those games:

(12/2/11 @ PC, L 1-2 (OT): Ross Mauermann scored 1:54 into overtime to hand then #1 Merrimack its first loss of the season. Jesse Todd scored for Merrimack.

(12/3/11 @ MC, L, 1-6): Providence scored five power-play goals to complete the weekend sweep of the Warriors, snapping Merrimack’s 13-game home unbeaten streak.

(1/29/12 @ MC, W, 4-2): Karl Stollery had a goal and an assist, while Joe Cannata had 37 saves. Rhett Bly, Josh Myers and Todd also scored for the Warriors.

Merrimack is playing seven freshmen, including five forwards and two defensemen. Ben Bahe and Brian Christie played together for Topeka (NAHL), while Justin Hussar, John Gustafsson, Matt Cronin, Vinny Scotti and Sean Robertson round out the talented and deep class of 2016.

The senior class needs only six wins to be most successful Merrimack class since joining Div. 1 in 1989. The senior class of Kyle Bigos, Nick Drew, Brandon Brodhag and John Heffernan needs six wins to supplant last year’s class as the winningest class in Merrimack’s Div. I history. The class of 2013 could become the first class to make the playoffs in each of its four seasons since Hockey East expanded from eight teams.
