Tim Cashman allowed just one run over 7.0 innings while striking out eight and the Merrimack offense plated four runs in the seventh as the Warriors won 6-1 over Bentley in their home opener yesterday.
Merrimack improved to 16-6 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10. The Warriors are three victories shy of their win total last year.
Alan Pastyrnak Jr. stroked the game-winning hit.
Matt Brown later added a two-run single to center to make it 5-1.
Merrimack junior hockey players Mike Collins and Jordan Heywood were named to the New England All-Star Team.
Collins, who also was first-team Hockey East, finished second in the league with 32 points in conference games and tied for first with 13 power play points.
Collins led all Warriors with 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) while also leading the team in shots and power-play points. He has recorded 93 points in 109 career games.
Heywood ranked second on the Warriors with 21 points and 13 assists while compiling the most ice time. Heywood ranked fourth in the Hockey East in scoring among defensemen. He has played in all 114 games since becoming a Warrior and he was named a finalist for the Humanitarian Award as a junior captain.
Bellino, tennis team wins
Andover graduate Vince Bellino won at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-1) to help lead the men’s team 5-4 over American International.
Merrimack improved to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10.
The women’s team lost 6-3 to New Haven and is 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
