Sports in a Minute: BC football scouting Central star

BC football interest

D’Andre Drummond-Mayrie, Central Catholic’s talented 6-0, 200-pound junior defensive back, has attracted Boston College’s attention. DDM, one of two juniors named to the All-MVC Division 1 team, is expected to be on the sidelines Saturday for BC’s spring game.

Football’s finest

Tufts-bound running back Chance Brady of Haverhill and Brown wide receiver recruit Will Heikkinen of Andover are among the 34 Eastern Mass. seniors who will be honored as National Football Foundation scholar-athletes. Both were All-Scholastics in the fall.

Thompson’s Sweet 16

Forward Paul Thompson, 24, of Derry has 16 goals (third most on team) and nine assists in 51 games with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Teammate Bobby Farnham, a 24-year-old forward, has three goals and five assists in 57 games. Andover’s John McCarthy, 26, a forward with the Worcester Sharks, has nine goals and 15 assists in 59 games.

The Newest Owl

Central Catholic’s gritty All-MVC point guard Lucas Hammel will be continuing his career at Keene State. ...

Lars Anderson was on five teams in six months: Red Sox, Indians, Diamondbacks, White Sox and Blue Jays.

Softball question

Noticed a couple of very talented softball players decide not to play this spring. Wonder if in the future they’ll look back and kick themselves like so many do? If I’m a coach, I’d strongly encourage a top player to return to the team.

As always, local wrestlers did themselves proud with eight making the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team. Other local All-Scholastics were:

Basketball: Drex Costello, St. John’s/North Andover; John Mastascusa, North Reading; Chris Bardwell, North Andover (Super Team); Casey McLaughlin, Central and Boys Coaches of the Year Mike McVeigh of North Andover (Division 2) and Joe Casey of North Reading (Division 3); Track: Mike O’Donnell, Methuen.
