Odds and ends: Last year was believed to be the first EMass. title in school history. Division 4 doesn’t have a state champ as there are no Central/West teams. ... Pat Slack and Jeff Moore will be asked to pick up the mound load for four-year starter, Ryan Browner, who is now coming out of the pen at Southern Maine. Pat’s younger brother, Ryan, and Mike Goddu will be freshmen pushing for innings this year. ... Before Friday’s season opener with North Shore, a “Day of Champions” will be held, honoring all the champion youth teams in town and culminating with the presentation of the Royals EMass title banner. ... Former Pentucket outfield standout Phil Desilets joins the staff.

Assistants: Phil Desilets, varsity assistant; Tim Larsen, varsity assistant; Dave Daron, JV

Coach Justin Spurr (2nd year, 14-11): “We have a lot more depth, a lot more experience than we’ve had in the past. This year’s team should be better than last year’s team, which won a state title. They’re hungry. They’re not just sitting back. They know what it takes to win it and have the drive to do it again. North Reading will be tough, Lynnfield returns a lot. On any given day, we can play with all of them.”
