College Stars: Area athletes recognized for academic success

---- — A slew of area athletes have picked up academic honors lately.

The Little East Conference Winter All-Academic Teams (minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA) included:

Westfield State senior swimmer Kiley Perrone of Methuen, Keene State junior swimmer Sheila Cremin of Andover; Keene State sophomore track athlete Hannah Doolittle of Hampstead and Southern Maine junior basketball player Erin McNamara of West Newbury.

UNH football players Alex Blane of North Andover, a sophomore offensive lineman, and Ryan Lynch of Atkinson, a sophomore defensive back, made the CAA Academic All-Conference team. Players need at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Husson junior Marcy Francoeur of Danville (soccer), Lasell junior Katie Ebner of East Hampstead (soccer) and St. Joe’s of Maine junior Rachelle Messuri of Atkinson (field hockey) made the North Atlantic Conference Fall All-Academic team. Honorees need a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Stonehill honored its top scholar-athletes from the fall with junior field hockey player Devin Ingersoll of Londonderry one of five Chieftains cited for earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Among those in the 3.5-3.99 GPA range for the fall were junior Trent Fontanella of Pelham and senior Caroline McBride of North Reading (cross country), sophomore Dan Cormier of Methuen and junior Angelina Comei of Bradford (track), senior Courtney Marchand from Timberlane (softball) and senior Kayla Green of Londonderry and freshman Jillian Spinney of Londonderry (lacrosse).

JDH record

Bridgewater State junior Joshua Danner-Hicks won the MASCAC/New England Alliance indoor triple jump with a meet record 46-2. Sophomore Josh Goehring of Haverhill won the 600 meters in 1:22.79 and ran on Bridgewater’s 4x800 team, which won in 8:10.87.

Another Bear standout, freshman Danielle Poto of North Andover, won the women’s 5,000 in 19:15.45.

Dan’s the man at Plymouth

Plymouth sophomore first baseman/catcher Dan Armstrong of Danville is batting .417 (15 for 26) with eight runs and six RBIs.

Freshman outfielder Shirley Butterfield of Atkinson (5 for 14, 3 doubles, 3 runs), junior outfielder/first baseman Shannon Murphy of Chester (7 runs in 9 games), junior pitcher/tri-captain Nora Galvin of Windham (3-4, 3.47 ERA, 42 Ks, 38 innings) and freshman pitcher Sara Gaudet of Londonderry (2 appearances) are playing for the softball team.

Senior starting defenseman Sean Allen of Derry (7 ground balls), junior attack Brett Miller of Windham (8 goals, 8 assists), junior defenseman Brandon Foley of Londonderry (1 appearance) are playing for the 4-1 men’s lacrosse team.

For the 3-1 women’s team, sophomore starting midfielder Molly Gleason of Haverhill (1 goal, team-high 23 draw controls, 6 caused turnovers) is off to a fine start and freshman Kim Morris of Londonderry is a reserve attack.

Brama Bull

Joe Bramanti started 12 games for Wright State. The Brama Bull’s numbers weren’t spectacular (1.6 points, 1.1 assists, 1.7 rebounds in 14.5 minutes) but the defensive-minded freshman from Andover’s intangibles were important for the 23-13 Raiders.

Harris on the hardwood

Sophomore Katherine Harris started 15 of 30 games at Bucknell. The guard from Derry averaged 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds a game. The math major is a dean’s list student.

Colby report

Sophomore Dan Hyszczak of Andover (middle distance runner in track), junior Ben Lewis of Haverhill (swimmer), sophomore Ryan Bachur of North Reading (swimmer) and junior basketball player Appalonia Tankserley of North Andover and Brooks (1.4 points a game) were winter athletes at Colby.

Senior Morgan Lingar of Danville, one of five captains, helped the Mules to a sixth in the distance medley relay and an eighth in the 4x800 at Division 3 New Englands. Freshman Alanna McDonough of Andover helped the Mules win the Division 3 New Englands in the 4x400 with a 3:58.15 clocking.

Hockey East happenings

Here is a quick rundown on the locals in Hockey East this winter.

At Maine, junior defenseman Brice O’Connor of Londonderry (3 assists in 26 games) and sophomore forward Andrew Cerretani of Pelham (2 assists in 22 games) were contributors.

UMass sophomore goalie Steve Mastalerz of North Andover was 3-8-1 with a 3.19 goals-against and a .891 save percentage. Senior Nick Drew of Andover was a reserve keeper for Merrimack.

BU junior goalie Kerrin Sperry of North Reading (20-4-3 .915 save percentage, 2.20 goals against) had a huge season in leading the Terriers to the national title game.

UConn senior forward Kelly Horan of Methuen tallied three goals with nine assists. UNH junior forward Katie Kleinendorst of North Andover appeared in three games.

Monks’ 1-2 punch

St. Joseph’s of Maine freshman pitcher Corey McNamara of West Newbury, who also played basketball, has made five appearances with three saves, an 0-1 record, a .194 opponent batting average and a perfect 0.00 ERA in nine innings.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Valenti of Lawrence and Central Catholic is also doing the job with a 1-0 record and 0.69 ERA in 13 innings.

Freshman midfielder Jake O’Brien of Andover (5 goals, 6 assists, 13 ground balls) and sophomore midfielder Alex O’Neil of Salem (5 ground balls) are playing for the 4-6 lacrosse team.

Junior defender Rachelle Messuri, a tri-captain from Atkinson, has one goal and leads the 6-4 women’s team in caused turnovers (23) and ground balls (46).
