Sports in a minute: Andover's Hennessy toasts Sox

Hennessy toasts Sox

It was exciting to see former Salem star @text5:Terry Doyle@text5: pitch for the Red Sox on Thursday. But another local did some damage for Boston’s opponent.

Former Andover High star @text5:John Hennessy@text5: had his way with the Sox, going 2 for 2 on the night for Boston College. Hitting leadoff, the Eagles junior infielder had a single and double, the latter off @text5:Junichi Tazawa,@text5: who made 37 appearances for the Sox last year.

Hennessy, a 2010 Andover grad, was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star three times in baseball and twice in football.

Soft side of linebacker

Former Merrimack College star and current Indianapolis Colts linebacker @text5:Shawn Loiseau@text5: is a 240-pound hitting machine that made 382 tackles in his Warriors career, benches over 300 pounds and is now knocking on the door in the NFL after spending last year on the Colts’ practice squad.

But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have softer side — apparently for puppies.

The other day he posted this on his official twitter account “@ShawnLoiseau”.

“My new best friend in the world..baby Rhea..she’s and olde English bulldog puppy with blue eyes #adorable”

McLaughlin on a mission

Former Andover High and Holy Cross basketball star @text5:Ashley McLaughlin @text5:is about to run the Boston Marathon, and is dedicating it to someone close to her heart.

McLaughlin, a 2004 Andover grad, is running the 2013 Boston Marathon in honor of close friend and former Golden Warrior teammate @text5:Alexandra Miliotis@text5:, who died at 16-years-old of Leukemia in 2002.

“I know the story of Alex and her battle with Leukemia is one that many Andover residents still remember as she touched their lives,” said McLaughlin via e-mail last week.

McLaughlin will be running for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

@Sports Minute head color 2 decks:Concussions not just in football

The topic of concussions has become an ever-present aspect of football in recent years, as the NFL tries to tweak the sport to make it safer.

But the reality is, concussions are not limited to contact sports.

Just ask Andover diver @text5:Alex Blake@text5:, who recently placed third at the Division 1 state meet. He suffered a concussion in the pool.

“I was learning a new dive on the three-meter (board),” he said. “It was a back, 1 1/2 and I came out of my dive too early and hit the back of my head on the water. There are a lot of close calls. Learning backward and reverse dives, you land flat on the water and you come close to the board.”

NFL Draft combine

This week’s coverage of the NFL Draft combine further proves that there is no limit to America’s hunger for football. But the love of the combine is apparently a relatively new phenomenon.

According to a few stories, 800 media credentials were given out for the combine this year. Back in the 1990’s there were less than 20 media members that covered the event.

It probably doesn’t hurt that the NFL Network is covering it 24/7.
