Lumb's favorite Fenway moment

Last year we ran a special segment called “Favorite Fenway Memories” and the response we got — nearly 75 stories with photos — was overwhelming.

Last summer, North Andover’s Fred Lumb told me about his daughter, famed local hoopster Morgan Lumb (bound for Hartford in the fall), stepping up to the microphone before a weekend game and shouting, “Play ball!”

But he couldn’t find the photo. Well, he found it recently, and here it is of Morgan when she was only 7 years old.

Morgan was one of the best Little Leaguers in North Andover among the boys during her baseball career as an 11 and 12-year-old.

@Sports Minute head bw 2 decks:AN ALL-MVC NORTH FINAL 4?

Not since 1999 or even back to “Black Sunday” in 1995 have the MVC boys had a chance to make such a statement as they do tonight in the Division 1 North quarterfinals.

The slate of quarters tonight: Haverhill at Lynn English; Andover at St. John’s Prep; Cambridge at Central Catholic; and Everett at Lowell, all with 7 p.m. starts.

Could the Valley ever pull off the sweep to avenge that awful day back in 1995? That would be amazing, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Let’s put it this way, there’s a better chance tonight for a 4-0, than an 0-4, right? Right?

For the record, I definitely liked the format back in the day when the MIAA played all four quarters on the same date at a neutral site like Salem High.

Merrimack’s Marotta honored

Merrimack College junior netminder Sam Marotta, of Bridgewater, was named the Hockey East “Stop It” Goaltender of the Month for February.

Marotta amassed a 4-2-1 record in February, with a 1.69 goals-against and a .947 save percentage. Marotta also recorded his second shutout of the season, and third career, in a 1-0 win over UMass Lowell on Febraury 1.

The junior ranks third in Hockey East in goals-against (2.11) and save percentage (.928) for the season while accumulating an 11-7-4 record for the Warriors.

Merrimack, which has lost two in a row, has a chance to recoup some of its place in the national rankings against No. 10 ranked UMass Lowell for two games, including Game 1 tonight at Tsongas Arerna at 7 p.m. The teams meet again on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Lawler Arena. Merrimack is ranked 17th in the country at 14-12-6 and 12-8-3 in league play while Lowell is 19-9-2 and 13-8-2.

Tickets are still available for Sunday’s game, which will also be televised on CBS Sports Network.
