Central girls complete the sweep over Andover

Central girls complete the sweep

TEWKSBURY — Central Catholic dominated Andover High almost from the opening tap. It played swarming defense from start to finish, shutting down Andover’s top scorer. It got a really big performance from its star player. And, in the end, it advanced to the Division 1 North finals at the Tsongas Arena on Saturday.

Sound familiar?

It should. It’s pretty much what happened the night before when the Central boys faced off with their rivals from Andover the night before at Lawrence High in the North semis.

This time the Central girls whupped Andover, 62-31, winning three of their four meetings this winter with senior Casey McLaughlin, of North Andover, scoring 24 last night, including the 1,000th point of her career.

Central advances to the finals in Lowell where it will play the winner of the Billerica-Westford game tonight at Whittier Regional in Haverhill. The Central boys will face Lynn English on Saturday in Lowell. The game times will be announced on Friday.

One difference from the boys game the night before was the crowd. While it was believed that nearly 3,000 fans attended the game on Tuesday night, last night’s attendance was estimated at 800.
