Celts assistant warns not to underestimate Doc

Celtics assistant coach Armond Hill was in North Andover on Friday giving a lecture at the Elite Players Basketball Camp, which was hosted by Haverhill's Jeff Nelson, an NBA scout.

Afterward, Hill was asked about a variety of Celtics players and his boss, head coach Doc Rivers.

Doc Rivers: "He is one of the smartest people I've ever met when it comes to basketball. He sees a play before it happens. Nobody can break down a play on the chalk board like he can. Not only that, but he always has a counter. He is always one step ahead. I can't tell you how much I've learned from him."

Kevin Garnett: "He's one of the most versatile players, especially big men, in the league. He can score in the post. He can score while facing the basket. And he is a great rebounder. I've seen so many games that when he wants a rebound he gets it. The fans are going to love this guy. He has a ton of passion for the game."

Paul Pierce: "I really believe Celtics fans don't realize how good and how valuable Paul is. The problem is he makes it look so easy. He goes to the basket as well as any player in the league. Don't overlook that. It's not easy to do with so many great athletes out there. He also understands the game. He's very smart. He really is going to shine with Garnett and Allen here."

Ray Allen: "When Ray is on the other team, every time he shoots the ball, you think it's going in. He's the best shooter, I believe, in the league. He will help us by opening up the inside. What impresses me most about Ray is that he's a pro's pro. You don't worry about Ray. He works as hard as anyone."

C's point guard Rajon Rondo: "I believe in Rajon. Doc believes in him. He's one of the quickest guys around. He can get where he wants to go. He's a great passer, too, which isn't always noticed. The key for him is he will have to figure out where Kevin, Paul and Ray want the ball and get it to them in the right place. That will take some time. He also has to improve his shot. But I've been hearing he has spent hundreds of hours shooting. I realize he's young, but he's a very good listener."

Ex-Celtic Al Jefferson: "That was the toughest part about getting Garnett, losing Al. He was a great kid, who really worked to improve his game. He is going to be a very good player in this league. I know he loved playing for the Celtics and the fans loved him. Sometimes you have to realize this is a business, first."

Ex-Celtic Ryan Gomes: "I am really going to miss him (Hill attended his wedding on Friday night). He worked on fundamentals as much as anyone. They don't make better people than Ryan. If I had a son I would wish it was him. Again, this is a business. He really improved his game and is going to be around the NBA a long time. I will miss Ryan a lot."
