Moss delivers own version of a chemistry lesson

A simple lesson for this new breed of football pseudo-intellectuals.

Leave the chemistry to the lab techs.

This is football, not science. And when you are gifted as Randy Moss is, practice and phony, overpriced summer practice games simply aren’t necessary.

Moss’ Patriots debut was spectacular — nine catches, 183 yards and a touchdown — as New England dismantled the AFC East’s closest thing to a threat, the New York Jets, 38-14, to begin the 2007 regular season yesterday.

The critics were right. At age 30, Moss has lost that fifth gear he once had in his early Minnesota days.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder had barely touched the accelerator as he sprinted by three defenders and hauled in Tom Brady’s 51-yard TD bomb, perfectly in stride.

This guy caught 101 TD balls before he hit the big 3-0. He’s a freak, and he doesn’t even need the top gear.

“That’s the way Randy plays,” coach Bill Belichick lauded. “He’s a good player.”

Anyone with football sense chuckled last April when the Pats stole a disgruntled Moss from Oakland for a mere fourth-round draft pick.

Moss received what he wanted, a trip to football heaven, where winners, performers and playmakers are heroically welcomed.

Remember all those whiners wondering how Randy would fit in?

“What’s he going to do when Tom Brady spreads the football around?” they lamented, clogging up the radio airwaves and filling page after page of newsprint.

What he’s going to do is catch the football and rip defenses apart. Yesterday, Brady hit on 22 of 26 passes for 297 yards.

Even the most cynical, anti-Randy types would have to figure he’ll be satisfied with one-third of Brady’s throws going his way.

Moss is everything this team needed a year ago when Deion Branch first held out and then was sent to Seattle.
