New-look PMA tabbed as favorite

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Commonwealth Conference

OVERVIEW: With powerhouse Minuteman being bumped up to the Upper Division and PMA moving to the Lower, the Panthers are being praised as the team to beat in the division. Minuteman may still be the cream of the crop in the Upper, where Greater Lawrence and Whittier should be heard from.

Fellowship Christian

2006-07 record: 8-9, lost in Division 4 North first round

Returning starters (5): Brittany Glines, 5-4, Sr., guard; Allison Lundquist, 5-10, Sr., center; Irveline Claude, 5-6, Jr., forward; Chelsea Kirmelewicz, 5-8, Soph., forward; Brittney Marvin, 5-3, Soph., guard

Returning lettermen: Kara Lundquist, 5-2, Soph., guard; Denise Soto, 5-11, Jr., forward

Newcomers: Melissa Farinha, 5-9, Jr., forward; Maggie Lundquist, 5-1, 8th grade, guard; Vicki Garcia, 5-11, Jr., center; Marieme Garcia, 5-9, Frosh., forward; Arianna Beaulieu, 5-8, 7th grade, forward

Candidates in all grades: 12

Captains: TBA

Returning leaders: Brittany Glines 13.8 ppg

Returning honorees: Brittany Glines, All-CAC

Assistants: Kim Lundquist

Opener: Dec. 11 at Northeast, 3:30 p.m.

Odds and ends: There are Lundquists everywhere. Allison and Maggie Lundquist are sisters. Kara Lundquist, who commutes all the way from Bow, N.H., is their cousin. Kara's mother, Kim, is an assistant with FCA. Alison and Maggie's brother is FCA soccer star Brian Lundquist. ... Melissa Farinha started two years ago but elected not to play last winter. ... Vicki and Marieme Garcia are sisters.

Coach Scott Phillips (2nd year, 8-9): "It's good to have Melissa Farinha returning. These girls are the same as the volleyball team (which reached the Division 3 North semifinals). They have a lot of desire. Hopefully we'll do as well as last year. Brittany Glines is a great all-around player. Allison Lundquist blossomed last year."

Greater Lawrence

2006-07 record: 17-7, lost in Division 4 North semifinals

Returning starters (2): Tatiana Perez, 5-8, Sr., forward; Tiffany Aguirre, 5-1, Soph., guard

Candidates in all grades: 32

Captains: TBA

Returning leaders: Tatiana Perez 4.2 ppg, Tiffany Aguirre 9.0 ppg

Returning honorees: None

Assistants: Tara Mansour Neilon, varsity assistant; Jim Qualter, JV; Alba Santos, volunteer

Opener: Dec. 11 at Minuteman, 4:45 p.m.

Odds and ends: The Reggies lost to eventual champion New Mission. ... Since the 1987-88 season, only the 2005-06 team had more wins (22-4) and went further (Division 4 North final). ... Coach Tricia Fleming said they identify the Javier twins by their shop majors (Rosa Allied and Rosa Metal Fab). They both have the same middle names. ... Tatiana and Talia Perez are also twins. ... Long-time assistant Becky Haggerty left the program because she had twins in July. ... Volunteer assistant Alba Santos, who is a secretary at the school, played for Fleming two years ago.

Coach Tricia Fleming (10th year, 99-84): "We're going back to the basics. We have a lot of JV players who want it. Tatiana Perez is a very good player. She's real strong under the basket. Tiffany Aguirre has so much more to offer but she did start as a freshman. Her and Tatiana have to play the whole game and run the club and we'll be able to compete. Angie Gonzalez is a leader and intense. I see really good things under the hoop from Paola Gutierrez. She's raw but has so much potential."
