Andover relays steal national spotlight

Girls Track

The Andover High girls and Haverhill's Samantha Stabile enjoyed a superlative two days at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., over the weekend.

For Andover, the highlight came Friday when the foursome of Colleen Shannon (2:11 in the 800), Melissa Knapp, Kayley Pettoruto and Vanessa Singleton ran a 4:01.88 for sixth place, which earned them All-America status. Pettoruto was clocked in 59.0 in the 400 and Knapp had a 24.5 split in the 200 with Singleton at 25.0.

That same foursome came back yesterday and ran a 4x400 school-record time (by two seconds) and an all-time area best of 3:54.05 (the previous best being 3:55.54 set by Ipswich-Georgetown in 2002), which earned them a second place in their heat and 11th overall. Shannon (57.4) and Singleton (57.5) had the fastest splits of the day.

"Those girls really put on quite a show," said Andover coach Peter Comeau.

Individually, Stabile finished fourth in the 200 emerging elite division with a 25.33 in the finals after recording a school-record 25.28 in the prelims. Knapp finished seventh with a school-record 25.61. Also, Shannon was seventh in the emerging elite division of the 800 with a 2:15.35.

Boys Track

McConnell fourth at nationals

Andover's Chris McConnell finished fourth in the 100 meters in the emerging elite division at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. yesterday. McConnell ran an 11.02 after turning in a school-record 10.78 in the preliminaries. He also finished eighth in the 200 with a 22.77.

Baseball

Diamonds beat up Stoneham

The Haverhill Diamonds beat Stoneham 10-6 in the Northeast Baseball League. Ethan Mooradian was the winning pitcher to improve to 3-0, giving up just one earned run in four innings. Damian Colman was 2 for 3, scoring two runs with three RBIs to lead the offense and Chad Kimball was also 2 for 3 and scored two runs with two RBIs. Jon Tannian added a pinch-hit single to drive in two runs for the Diamonds (7-2).

Salem Post 23, behind the complete-game win of Jake Lambert, defeated Nashua 3-2. Lambert gave up just two earned runs and struck out four in seven innings for the win.

Mike Patane drove in one and scored once for Salem, which improved to 5-1. Also, Josh Treff had three hits for Salem and scored a run and Darren Brown was 2 for 3.

Harness Racing

Adams on top five times

Brewer Adams of Haverhill drove five horses to victory yesterday at Rockingham Park. He drove Double Duty, Matt's Millennium, The Awful Truth, Life's Z Tam and Camsurge all to wins. Adams is a double threat as a driver and a trainer. He trained every horse he won with except The Awful Truth.
