TROY, N.Y. — Brock Huntzinger continued his assault on the New York-Penn League, allowing just one hit in a seven-inning complete game, leading the Lowell Spinners to a 9-0 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats.
It marked the first career complete game for the 19-year-old, who struck out four to improve to 4-0 and lower his ERA to 0.49.
Tri-City (13-19) held the Spinners (14-18) at bay through three innings, before Ronald Bermudez led off the fourth with a triple to center field. Bermudez scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Natale to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead. Luis Sumoza tacked on a solo home to put the Spinners up 2-0.
.After Kade Keowen and Ryan Dent reached base to start the fifth inning, they were driven in by a Will Middlebrooks sacrifice fly and a Mitch Dening triple. The Spinners added two additional runs on RBIs by Bermudez and Deshaun Brooks to extend the Spinners lead to 6-0.
.The red-hot Sumoza has recorded a hit in his last seven at-bats and is hitting .400 in the month of July. His fourth home run tied him for the team lead with Ryan Dent.. Dening (2 for 5), Bermudez (2 for 4) and Middlebrooks (3 for 3) also recorded multiple hit games...
Lowell looks to take the series today when 2008 Boston Red Sox first-round pick Bryan Price (0-1, 3.18) gets the ball for his second professional start.
New Hampshire 8, New Britain 1
Manchester, N.H. — Scott Campbell and J.P. Arencibia each hit a pair of home runs as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats won their third straight game, 8-1, over the New Britain Rock Cats.
Campbell, who also homered in his final at bat Saturday night, led off the bottom of the first inning with his seventh home run of the season. Ryan Patterson followed with a walk, and scored on Arencibia's sacrifice fly, giving New Hampshire a 2-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Klosterman.
Arencibia (2 for 3) then stroked his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot. Campbell (2 for 5, 3 RBIs) added his career-high eighth home run in the fourth inning with Andrew Pinckney (2 for 4) on base. Arencibia's second home run of the game, and eighth of the season, was a leadoff shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Robert Ray (4-4) departed after 52/3 innings, having allowed only one unearned run. The righthander scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked four to snap a personal three-game losing streak.
New Hampshire tied a franchise record with its fifth home run of the game when Brian Jeroloman (2 for 3) tagged his sixth homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Fisher Cats open a four-game series against the Trenton Thunder tonight at 7 p.m. at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Righthander Kenny Rodriguez (1-2, 6.60) pitches for New Hampshire.
Nashua 6, Ottawa 2
Nashua, N.H. — Jason Paul pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, striking out eight and leading Nashua over the Ottawa Rapidz, 6-2.
Pride reliever Mike Joyce was the first man out of the bullpen and dealt a scoreless seventh inning, while Adam Piechowski followed suit with a perfect eighth. Closer Andrew Weimer let up a pair of runs in the ninth inning while finishing the game for the Pride.
Catcher Luis Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while third baseman Argenis Tavarez was also 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Sandy Almonte drove in a run with a double.
Also driving in runs for the Pride were outfielders Vinny Pennell and Ervin Alcantara along with second baseman Ismael Castro. The Pride begin a five game road trip at the Brockton Rox tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
