Haverhill Diamonds strike first in finals

Haverhill Diamonds defeated Amesbury, 14-2, in game one of their Intertown Senior Babe Ruth best of three championship series. A.J. DeRoche pitched the complete-game win, striking out 10.

Andrew Buckley had a grand slam and finished with five RBIs. Austin Brodie went 3 for 3, scoring three runs and driving in four. Billy Lafferty had two hits with three runs scored.

Basketball

Hoops for Hope quarters open tonight

The Hoops for Hope Summer League boys playoff continue tonight with the quarterfinal best of three series opening tonight at Sullivan Park in South Lawrence.

The matchups are at 6 p.m., Lynn English vs. Dracut and at 7:15 p.m., Andover vs. Westford and Lawrence vs. Salem, N.H. Central Catholic will square off with Acton-Boxboro, but that the time on that one is still undecided with many of the Raiders attending Merrimack College's ABA Camp this week.

All four series continue tomorrow night, and Game 3s, if necessary, will be played Thursday.

The rain site for the playoffs is the Andover High fieldhouse.

Tennis

Dana Ball tourney champs decided

The 17th annual Dana Ball "Love" Tennis Tournament had its championships decided recently in Derry, N.H.

One of the largest charity tennis events in New England, the tourney drew 180 players, who helped raise over $5,500, with $2,500 headed to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the rest donated to area recreational projects.

As usual, the prestigious "Dana Bears" were handed out with Londonderry's Ken Gould and Patrice Burbine, Chester's Robert Allard and Derry's Julie Accardo earning the honors.

Here's a list of the championship matches:

Men's Singles: Ian Hastings (Andover, Mass.) def. Barry Lemire (Goffstown, N.H.) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Men's Doubles: Chris Andros and Elias Moujaes (Lowell, Mass. ) def. David Wheeler (Manchester, N.H.) and Tomas Gonzalez (Windham, N.H.) 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Women's Doubles: Bethany Huard and Ali McKinney (Londonderry, N.H.) def. Daniella Mellen and Kristen Bartlett (New London, N.H.) 6-1, 6-1.

Boys' 15U Singles: Harrison Max (Windham, N.H.) def. Jarred Diorio (Plaistow, N.H.) 8-4.

Boys' 12U Singles: Max Curtin (Manchester, N.H.) def. Matt McKinney (Londonderry, N.H.) 8-5.

Girls' 15U Singles: Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H.) def. Abby Curtin (Manchester, N.H.) 8-1.
