Zenevitch picks BC

Central Catholic basketball star Katie Zenevitch has verbally committed to Boston College.

"It's always been a dream of mine," the 6-foot-2 junior center said.

"Katie's wanted to go to BC since she was 10," her mother Janice said.

BC, which originally offered Zenevitch a full scholarship over the winter, re-offered in June.

First-year coach Sylvia Crawley, who replaced Cathy Inglese after she resigned in April, hit it off with the Central Catholic center right away. A visit to BC's Chestnut Hill campus this weekend simply reaffirmed Zenevitch's feelings.

Saturday, she tailgated at the BC-Central Florida football game with the women's basketball team.

"I know right now," Zenevitch told Janice afterward. "My heart is in it. I'm meant to be here right now."

"Why look anywhere else?" Janice remembered her daughter saying. "They want me. I want them."

There was no reason to wait. Yesterday morning, after breakfast with the BC women's basketball coaching staff, Zenevitch approached Crawley.

Over the past few months, the coach has repeatedly said, "Tell me when you want to be an Eagle."

"I'm ready to be an Eagle," Zenevitch said.

Zenevitch, a Methuen resident, drew a big smile from Crawley.

"She's 110 percent sure (she wants to go to BC)," Janice said.

After only two high school seasons, the two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star was already one of the most sought after players in New England. In addition to BC, West Virginia, Providence, Holy Cross, Northeastern and Marist had all offered full scholarships, Janice said. Duke and Kentucky had also shown interest, she added.

Zenevitch is ranked the 24th nationally in the Class of 2010 in the ESPNU HoopGurlz Super 60.

She'll join Londonderry's Stefanie Murphy, last season's Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, on the Eagles.

Zenevitch averaged 14.8 points and 14.5 rebounds last season for the Raiders, who lost to Andover in the Division 1 North final. As a freshman in 2006-07, she helped lead her team to the state title game, where the Raiders fell to Springfield Central.
