Stuart's goal helps Wings down Bruins

Brad Stuart scored midway through the third period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 exhibition victory over the Boston Bruins.

Henrik Zetterberg, Brett Lebda and Cory Emmerton also scored for Stanley Cup champion Detroit (1-0-1).

P.J. Axelsson, Jeremy Reich and Martin St. Pierre tallied for Boston (1-1-1). Detroit played without captain Niklas Lidstrom. He broke his nose in Wednesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal.

Pro baseball: Rivera returns to N.Y. for MRI on shoulder

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera returned to New York yesterday for an MRI on his shoulder, but the injury is not considered serious enough to keep him out of this weekend's final series at Boston. Rivera is 6-5 with a 1.43 ERA and 38 saves in 39 opportunities.

More pro baseball: Vernon, ex-AL batting champ, dies

Mickey Vernon, a two-time American League batting champion with the Washington Senators and seven-time All-Star first baseman during a 20-year career in the major leagues, has died. He was 90.

Vernon died Wednesday at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, hospital spokeswoman Jackie Woolfall said. He had a stroke last week, according to Jim Vankoski, Vernon's friend of 25 years.

Pro football: Grand juries fail to indict ex-Bears back

Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson will not face charges over his two alcohol-related arrests in the Austin area earlier this year.

Two Travis County grand juries declined to indict Benson on charges of boating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.

The former University of Texas player is "elated" over the decision, said Sam Bassett, his attorney.

More pro football: Judge issues warrant for Shirley

A Fresno County judge has issued a warrant for an NFL player facing trial on suspicion of drunken driving.

Superior Court Judge Brant K. Bramer said that Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Jason Shirley has until Tuesday morning to appear in court or the warrant will go into effect.

Pro basketball: Cavs owner unhappy with LeBron talk

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says the speculation that LeBron James will leave Cleveland in two years is out of line and "an insult to the city."

Gilbert says it's nothing more than conjecture from bored sports reporters.

He says James has given no indication that he plans to leave for New York after his contract expires in 2010. ...

Allan Houston has signed with the New York Knicks and will attempt another comeback with his former team.

College basketball: UConn basketball player arrested

Connecticut freshman basketball player Nate Miles has been arrested on charges he violated a restraining order.

According to UConn Police arrest records, Miles was served with a restraining order on Sept. 22, but violated it by placing a phone call to the protected party that day.

College football: Oregon State stuns No. 1 USC

Freshman Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Oregon State built an early lead and held on for a 27-21 upset victory over top-ranked Southern California last night. The Beavers (2-2, 1-1 Pacific-10) also upset USC at Reser Stadium in 2006. This time, Oregon State took a 21-0 lead in the first half, then capitalized on a late turnover.

USC quarterback Mark Sanchez's pass was intercepted by safety Greg Laybourn on the 30 with less than 3 minutes to play. Laybourn ran the ball back 28 yards to put Oregon State on the 2, and Rodgers ran 2 yards to make it 27-14.

Sanchez hit Patrick Turner with a 14-yard scoring pass with 1:19 left, but time ran out on the Trojans (2-1, 0-1).
