ASHBURNHAM — The Phillips Academy offense took much of the day off, but the Big Blue defense was relentless yesterday.
As a result, Phillips remained unbeaten (4-0) with a 7-0 victory over Cushing.
The only score of the game came in the second quarter when Brandon Michel caught a 12-yard TD pass from quarterback Ian Maag and Tom Mullen kicked the extra point.
Beyond that, there were only missed opportunities.
”We did not play well on offense at all,” said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. “We fumbled, we misfired, we were out of position ...”
Modeste had no complaints with the defense, which ended the game with a goal-line stand at the one-yard line.
Andover’s Tyler Marshall and Mike DeLaus both stood out. DeLaus had a sack and eight solo tackles while Marshall recorded two sacks. Matt Ilalio had two interceptions and Michael Moore had a game-saving tackle on the 5-yard line.
Ryder Stone led the offense with 176 rushing yards on 26 carries, but little else was effective for the Big Blue on that side of the ball.
Phillips hosts Northfield Mt. Hermon next Saturday for Parents Weekend.
