Saturday became “Championship Saturday” for a pair of area golfers from the Granite State.
Windham’s Connor Greenleaf showed his Division 2 competition one glimpse of hope with an opening hole bogey. The Boston College-bound senior drilled rapid-fire birdies on holes 4-5-6 to slam the door on his way to a total of 73-69 — 142 (-2) at Beaver Meadow in Concord.
Down the road a bit, Pelham’s Jake Vaiknoras delivered his second straight 71 at Ridgewood Country Club to claim the Division 3 championship by three strokes.
For Greenleaf, it was a sweep with the unbeaten Jags winning the team championship Thursday and a second straight individual title.
”The second time is just as nice,” said Greenleaf. “Being the defending champ, you feel a little more obligated to win it. It feels good to come through. The team title was so big, and this just feels unreal.”
Fab frosh James McKee finished eighth overall at 158 and teammate Adam Dolan grabbed ninth at 159.
Pelham’s Vaiknoras entered the championship at Ridgewood Country Club with an idea that something special could happen.
”I adjusted my putting stroke and things were starting to feel good,” said the senior, whose top choice could be Coastal Carolina. “It’s pretty exciting to finally win a state title. It’s something I’ve been shooting for in any sport since I was a freshman.
”Putting is all about confidence, and I made a couple of 30 footers today. It just felt like every putt I hit was going in. And a lot of them did.”
