Sports in a Minute: Haverhill's Ward off to a flying start

Hot start

Sophomore Brian Ward of Haverhill, a transfer from Dartmouth who played in the USHL the last two years, got off to a great start for the St. Lawrence hockey team. He scored a goal in both games in a sweep at Maine.

he wrote that?

It’s amazing what you can find in old newspapers. A rival newspaper wrote this about a comeback win by the Salem High football team in 1975. “The massive choke continued as Mike Hagen and Larry Douglas continued to make mincemeat out of the non-existent defense.”

Farley’s finest

Salem State junior Craig Farley of Bradford fired a two-round 79-77—156 to tie for eighth out of 35 golfers at the North Atlantic Conference Championships.

Holyfield’s son

Boston College is the first school to offer a scholarship to 5-11, 190-pound sophomore running back Elijah Holyfield of Atlanta’s Woodward Academy. His father is ex-heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield.

super sophomore

Bridgewater State sophomore Danielle Poto of North Andover has been the MASCAC Runner of the Week four times this fall. She placed 21st out of 361 runners with a 19:53.24 clocking at the 5K James Earley Invitational.

New Central coaches

Chris Piatelli, 29, is the new boys lacrosse coach at Central Catholic and Ashley MacDonald, 27, is the new girls coach. Piatelli, who lettered four years at Hamilton College, is a coach in the Middlesex Bears club program and is also the JV hockey coach at Brookline High. MacDonald, a Billerica native who owns the scoring record at University of New England (170-79—249), had been a Central assistant for four years.

Betcha didn’t know

Former great Methuen baseball coach Walter “Skeets” Scanlon, 88, of Lawrence, once scored six runs for Arizona State in a game against New Mexico.

Pirates and pucks

The 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates snapped their streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons — the longest such streak in North American professional sports history. Maybe the Division 1 University of Alaska Anchorage hockey team can do the same. The Seawolves, who have endured 20 straight losing seasons, are off to a 2-0 start including a win over defending NCAA runner-up Quinnipiac.

Maine Man

Marshwood High of Maine junior Zach Quintal already has committed to a baseball scholarship to UMaine. He’s the son of former North Andover High runner Bobby Quintal.

Last spring the 5-foot-10, 160-pound speedster batted .367 with 11 RBI and 19 runs and was 9 of 9 on steals.
