Gridiron Memories: Haverhill's miracle comeback win

In 1990, Haverhill won in spectacular fashion, 26-20, over perennial power Chelmsford. The Hillies forced three turnovers and scored three times in a 4:03 span late in the fourth quarter. The winning points came on a 22-yard pass from Scott Redfearn to Dan Dellea with 22 seconds left. Redfearn also threw a 7-yard TD strike to Sean Guertin.

In other action that week in 1990, Billerica walloped winless Lawrence 42-0. ... Craig McKenzie found Ryan Brooks for a 13-yard TD strike but Methuen fell to Tewksbury 14-6. ... Jim Cavanaugh threw a 46-yard TD pass to Eric Domek to highlight North Andover’s 28-14 win over North Reading. ... Sean Stevenson and Jeff Ruggieri caught TD passes from Jon Hanson as Pinkerton downed Merrimack 17-6. ... Mark Badura hauled in a TD pass from Rich Bernard but BG held off Salem 12-6. It was Bernard’s area-leading 11th TD pass of the year. ... Mike Rheaume and Keith McCabe both scored twice to power Timberlane to a 32-14 win over Plymouth.

Matt Perry was 12-of-13 passing and found Brett Hammond for two scores and Joe Marinaro had two sacks as Andover blanked Dracut 28-0. ... Matt Shaheen (63-yard interception return), Mike Lumia and Kevin Labrecque scored for Central in a 20-6 win over Wilmington. The Wildcats threw 46 times, an unheard of number for that era, with five interceptions. ... Georgetown, which had scored just once in its first five games, beat Whittier, 12-7, with a Frank Rondeau TD run with 20 seconds remaining the play of the game. The Wildcats’ Sye Curtis had a kickoff return for a score. ... Lance Hamel threw TD passes to Mike Roberge, Lance Weber and Chris Burkhart and Greater Lawrence drubbed Chelsea 35-6.

1980: Klimas all over the field

Eric Klimas made his father, third-year Methuen coach Larry Klimas, one proud man. Klimas intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble as Methuen whipped archrival Central Catholic, 20-0. ... Jim Davis and Marc Murphy combined for 215 yards and four rushing TDs for Pinkerton, which blanked Exeter, 26-0. ... Lawrence rode the 1-2 punch of running back Dave Speller and center Dave Fabrizio in a 45-15 shellacking of Greater Lowell. The 220-pound Speller scored twice, doing most of his damage behind blocks from Fabrizio. ... Paul Callery’s TD pass was the difference as Haverhill shaded Billerica 9-8. ... Junior Brien Moriarty, who would later earn a football scholarship to Northeastern, was 15 of 25 for 280 yards and three touchdowns as Andover beat Greater Lawrence 19-8. Moriarty spread the wealth with Tim Grams (6 catches, 114 yards), Wayne Merola (2 TDs) and Glenn McIntyre (TD) his prime targets. Recently, Merola has been cited for heroism as a fireman.

through the years: Ford carries Rangers

In 1986, Methuen rode Dan Ford (149 yards, 2 TDs) to a 24-6 win over Haverhill. ... Mike Parker admirably filled in for injured standout Sean Connolly. The senior came off the bench and engineered two scoring drives to spark North Andover to a 26-6 win over Pentucket.

In 1982, Larry “Nostradamus” Klimas predicted his Methuen team would beat fellow unbeaten Lowell 14-12. That’s exactly what happened as Barry Tardugno scored twice before 5,113 fans in Lowell. ... Jim Owens (TD catch, 30-yard field goal) carried Haverhill past favored Andover, 22-0.

In 1981, Carmen Scarpa and Kevin Poulson each rushed for a touchdown and Andover beat Billerica, 20-6, giving Dick Collins his 100th MVC win. ... Joe Hines (146 passing yards) found Ted Downer for a 34-yard score with 1:01 left and Haverhill beat Greater Lawrence for its first win of the season.

In 1965, Dave Rennie’s late TD gave North Andover a 15-8 win over Burlington. ... Traip Academy of Maine was unbeaten until it crossed the border. Bill Loomis had a big TD and Salem pulled out the win.
