Welch wins again

On case you missed it, Haverhill’s Jefferson Welch continued his impressive year of road racing by placing first in last week’s Knights on the Run 5K. Welch, who captured the Lowell racing series this summer, placed first in 16:16. That wasn’t quite good enough to reach his goal of breaking 16 minutes but it was nearly two minutes ahead of the runner-up, Dan Marino of North Andover.

Close behind in third was North Andover High wrestler Nick Cincotta. There were 284 finishers overall.

Another BostonVS. St. Louis battle

The brass sections of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony took to their instruments for some friendly rivalry in a video to support the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals in the 2013 World Series.

The musicians from the BSO and SLSO trash talk each other’s baseball teams and follow up with an arrangement of “Anything You Can Do” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

Windham eyes turf field

The Windham High School football program and the Windham Wolverines Youth football program teamed up last Friday night to host a sold out event to begin raising funds for a multi-sport turf field.

The Halloween Bash was held at Searles Castle and attended by over 270 people and supported by over 50 local businesses. The event also featured an appearance by former New England Patriot Pete Brock who presented a grant award on behalf of the Patriots Alumni Club.

“A turf field is a critical need for Windham High School athletics as the existing grass fields are insufficient for the number of teams we have that need access for practices as well as games, “ said Bill Raycraft, Athletic Director at WHS. “A multi-sport turf field will accommodate a number of our programs including football, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and baseball. “
