State champs roll
Defending champ and this year’s No, 2 seed Pinkerton rolled 4-1 over seventh-seeded Bedford in the Division 1 field hockey quarterfinals behind two goals each from Julie Saltamartini and Erin Johnston.
Meanwhile, Kiley Keenan and Rachael Denning scored to lead No. 3 Salem over sixth-seeded Merrimack.
The Astros and Blue Devils meet in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Ball Stadium.
On Senior Night, Timberlane’s Christina Nye recorded her 500th career kill. She had 19 in this match but Timberlane lost 3-1 to Merrimack.
Amari King recorded 11 kills and Hannah Walworth as well as Emily Holleran played well off the bench as PMA secured a spot in the Division 3 North volleyball tourney in its final regular season match by winning 3-2 over Nashoba Regional.
NR tourney bound
North Reading earned a spot in the state tourney with a 3-0 sweep of Hamilton-Wenham. Jillian O’Leary had 13 service points, including seven aces.
Top Score in 24
Kelly Lennon won the 200 IM (2:19.25) and 500 freestyle (5:21.95) as well as being part of Methuen’s winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams in the Rangers’ 97-87 victory over Lowell.
Lennon finished the regular season having won 24 individual races.
Andover girls swimming tied Chelmsford in a meet of two schools that entered undefeated in the MVC. With the tie, the two teams finished as co-MVC Large champions.
Andover’s only loss this year came against Acton-Boxborough, which lost to Chelmsford.
Maeve Awiszus won the 500 freestyle (5:13.26) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.86).
Andover finished second and third in the final race, the 400 freestyle relay, to secure the tie.
300th for Battistini
Rick Battistini won his 300th meet as the Haverhill swim coach yesterday, with an exciting 87-81 victory over Central Catholic. Cali Aramian won the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Hillies (8-2) and was on two winning relays, anchoring the 400 free relay with a superb final leg. Battistini got thrown into the pool by his team to celebrate his 300th.
