Area Roundup: Historic wins for Haverhill, Whittier

Hillies win thriller

Haverhill’s girls soccer team won its first-ever tournament in wild fashion, scoring with 45 seconds left for a 4-3 win over Lynn Classical. Kerrin Thomas scored the game winner for the Hillies (13-1-4) on an assist from Ashley Onofaro, who had a goal and two assists. Haverhill hosts Acton-Boxboro at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Whittier history

Whittier boys soccer won the first postseason game in its history (2000-present) with a 3-0 Division 2 prelminary round win over Shawsheen. Jacob Fudge, Alex Kresge and Joe Kennedy scored. Julian Brosi (7 saves) notched the shutout.

Grant lifts NECC

Northern Essex opened up with a 78-65 win over New Hampshire Tech. Ryan Grant led the Knights with 24 points and 5 steals and 10 rebounds. Derek Andreoli backed him with 16 points and 8 rebounds while Peterson Morency added 10 assists and 9 steals.

Alois rescues AHS

Andover beat Chelmsford in a wild 2-1 girls soccer first-round game when Veronica Alois scored on the first sudden death penalty kick. Emily Masterson had forced a kick wide early on the Lions’ first attempt.

The game had previously gone two 10-minute overtimes then five PKs. Andover’s Sarah Van Antwerp, Meredith Van Antwerp, Courtney Grygiel and Sophie Draper scored on the original PKs but Chelmsford also scored four times.

In the regular season, Chelmsford beat the Golden Warriors and tied them.

Bella Ball

Bella Papapetros of North Andover scored in the first half and Sophie Bymark (11 saves) as Brooks soccer handed Nobles (10-2-1) just its second loss 1-0.

Justin Time

Justin MacRae tallied two goals and two assists and Ben Noelk added two assists as Georgetown pounded Mystic Valley 6-0 in its tourney opener.
