Whirlaway repeats with 5 Grand Prix titles

MANCHESTER — The Whirlaway Racing Team did it again Sunday, wrapping up its second outstanding season with five Grand Prix titles.

In the final race of the 2013 season at the New England Marathon Championship in Manchester, Whirlaway won four team titles and was second in two others in difficult cold and windy conditions.

With that performance, for the second year in a row, Whirlaway captured three women’s titles and two on the men’s side.

“The weather was major factor today but everyone ran really well.” said Whirlaway coach Dave Kazanjian. “The women were amazing again sweeping all three divisions again and the men winning one with two second place finishes.”

The Whirlaway women won the open, masters, and senior divisions Sunday.

On the open side, Amy Bernard of Derry finished fourth overall with a fine time of 3:03 while teammate Christin Doneski was second in the masters division and eighth overall in a time of 3:09 leading the masters team to a first place finish.

Doneski won her third overall New England Masters title. Methuen’s Nancy Corsaro 3:18 and Maria Servin 3:31 went 1-2 in the seniors division to lead the team to a seniors title for the day.

With their outstanding finish at the Manchester the Whirlaway women, for the second year in a row swept all three titles for the overall 2013 New England Championship series. Women’s open, masters and seniors. “Absolutely amazing that the women could come back win all three titles again”, said Kazanjian.

Not to be outdone by the women, the men’s team had a great day also. Brandon Newbould finished third overall in a fast 2:28 to help lead the men’s open team to a second-place finish along with teammate Dan Princic, who was 23rd in 2:52.

On the master’s side, the team finished second, led by Joe Navas who finished second overall in the masters division in 2:44. The masters won the overall Grand Prix New England title for the year and for the 14th year in a row.
