George Gothier’s suicide squeeze plated J.T. Ruth in the bottom of the ninth as Haverhill Post 4 came all the way back from a 4-0 deficit to edge Salem Post 5-4 last night at Haverhill Stadium.
Matt Keefe tossed three innings of shutout relief, and Evan Penney earned the win by stranding a pair of runners in the top of the ninth. Sean Wrenn and Juanel Oriach each had a pair of hits, while Kyle Plocharcyzk and Ryan Landry (double) had key RBI’s to spark the Haverhill comeback.
Methuen Legion prevails
Methuen Post 122 lost a 5-0 lead to Newburyport, but pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning last night to prevail with a 6-5 victory. Enrique Veras was the winner in relief, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
Evan Lacroix had two hits and scored twice for Post 122 (2-1) while Jim Pierce was on base all night with a hit and three walks, scoring two runs.
Pentucket edges Andover in Hoops
In a battle of two of the stronger girls basketball programs in recent years, Pentucket edged Andover 32-28 in girls Hoops for Hope action. Kelsey McNamara led the Sachems with 13 points while Colleen Caveney had 13 for Andover.

Cregg award to Martinez
Jose Martinez is the winner of Lawrence’s prestigious 107th annual Cregg Medal for athletics and sportsmanship. He was a sprinter and team MVP in indoor track. He set the tone for the 15-8 baseball team by volunteering to move to the outfield.
Martinez will be attending Salem State.
Another Gray record
Governor’s Academy sophomore Mackenzie Gray of Andover added three inches to her own school triple jump record with a 39-3 at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. Gray placed 11th. She also placed 21st in the long jump (17-6) and high jumped 5-0 1/2.
Four locals at Brine event
There will be an impressive display of local talent at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic July 1-3 in Boyds, Md.
The New England North boys team includes Pinkerton junior defender Brett Connal and Londonderry sophomore midfielder Shayne Holland while Windham freshman attack Alex Parent is playing for New England South.
Pinkerton junior defender Jessica Cote is playing for the New England girls team.
Central at Fenway
The Central Catholic baseball team will receive the Sportsmanship Alliance of Massachusetts award before tonight’s Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
The Raiders also were honored with the MIAA Divison 1 sportsmanship award Saturday at the state championship game at LeLacheur Park.
